If you already have data.
Choose the cells, column, or row. Go to FormatCells. On the Numbering tab, choose Custom under Category, and in the Custom dialog box, type the number of digits you want to use in your data, thusly:
The above example would be for 7-digit account numbers or check numbers, etc. Zip codes can use the built-in Special format, so choose Special instead of Custom.
If you don't have any data yet, you can simply format your range as Text.

If you just want to enter a few cells with leading zeroes, there's no need to format the cells special-you can just type an apostrophe before you enter the values.
I have 5 digit and 5+4 = 9 digit zip codes in Excel. Some start with 0 such as 01122. Using the mail merge wizard, the zip codes that begin with zero are getting dropped, which is not what I want. I dont want it to convert a zip from 01122 to 1122, because a zip code should include the leading zero, not drop it.
Ive tried in MS Excel formatting the fields to custom zip of 5 or 9 digits and they still get the leading zeros dropped after the mail merge conversion. What should I be doing differently?
